Prof. Dr.-Ing. Bernd Bertsche

Founder of the Stuttgart reliability engineering research field, former institute director, industrial development engineer and internationally recognised technical authority.

Bernd Bertsche combines decades of research and teaching with first-hand development experience in the automotive industry. He contributes this knowledge to RelTest through mentoring and technical advice.

Knowledge that has shaped reliability engineering.

Bernd Bertsche joined the Institute of Machine Components at the University of Stuttgart in 1984 and completed his doctorate in system reliability. In 1996, he established reliability engineering as a research field; from 2000 onward, he directed IMA with several research groups and an average of around 55 employees.

Between 1989 and 1992, he worked in passenger-car development at Daimler AG. His responsibilities included a stepped-transmission group and the project for a new all-wheel-drive passenger car that contributed to the 4MATIC development.

Nine specialist books, around 300 national and international publications and four patents document his work. His dissertation received the FAG Kugelfischer Research Award and the VDI Ring of Honour.

As spokesperson for a DFG research group, head of the VDI advisory board for reliability management and member of DKE committee K 132, he shaped professional exchange. Through TTI GmbH, he also supported numerous technology-oriented start-up projects.
